In Coerver® Coaching, this topic is one of our personal favourites – 1 v 1.
“Any player who has good 1 v 1 skills can often make a difference in a game, creating goal chances for himself/herself or teammates. I wish the Coerver Coaching Programme had been available when I was a player!”
Juergen Klinsmann, Bayern Munich Legend & German World Cup Champion
To become a good 1 v 1 player, firstly you need to learn the Coerver Coaching 1 v 1 Game Moves. Our 1 v 1 curriculum has 3 Parts: Changes of Direction Moves, Stop/Start Moves and Feint Moves.
Secondly; practice practice practice! In Coerver we break down the Moves step by step, which is the best way to perfect them, particularly when they are more complicated. You can make even the most difficult moves seem natural and easy. Practising 1 v 1 moves regularly at home will give you the confidence to use moves in a game to beat your opponent and you will be amazed how quickly you can improve.
Watch the video and break it down steps below to learn.
The Side Step
“1 v 1 skills are useful for every outfield player, regardless of their position. Coerver Coaching is 1 v 1 teaching at its best.“
Osvaldo Ardiles, Argentina World Cup Champion
No. Defenders also need to learn 1 v 1 too. If you’re a defender and don’t learn and practice the Moves it is more difficult to recognize them in the game and defend effectively against them.
Coerver Coaching is for all players and all parts of the game. And the more we can effortlessly transition from attack to defence and back again the better player we will be.
A feint is usually when the opponent is in front of you, so fake one step either side, then take the ball the opposite way.
Don’t take too many touches, good feints usually are one or two touches after the feint is made.
After the Feint accelerate away.

Use A Change of Direction Move to shield the ball (with your foot and/or body)
Once you shield the ball either pass it or run away into space
With a persistent opponent you may have to do two single Changes of Direction until you can find the space to pass or run
…………………………………………………………………………………
A Stop & Start Move is when your opponent is either side of you
They work very well on the wings. To make your opponent hesitate you have space to cross the ball
Control your speed fast then slows down then accelerate.

Players like Messi and Ronaldo use these moves game in game out. You can do this too!
